You have definitely opened my eyes to quite a few things that I always questioned. I was raised as a Mormon...my mom converted when I was 6, I was baptized at 8...sealed to my family in the DC temple, went to Primary, was in YW's...the whole thing. At 17, I started to realize that there were many MANY rules and things that I did not understand. Of course, as a young child, you go to church because your parents go or because you are forced to. Mine was the latter. If I chose not to go to church on a Sunday, my dad would go through the house and take all the electric cords to the telephones, tvs and computers. My car keys were taken away and for three hours, I was a prisoner of my house.
This was the first reason why I chose to not continue going to church. My dad's entire side of the family is Mormon and believe me, we hear our share of "go back to church." I simply explain to them, we don't have to attend church to believe in God. Because in all reality,like you, I HAVE ISSUES WITH SOME OF THE TEACHINGS!!! Mind you, my dad is Elder's Quroum President and just recently a High Councilman. My grandpa is also a High Councilman. Mom is YW's President...
I didn't like the fact that because my husband and I didn't attend church all the time and we have drank and smoked in the past, that meant we were horrible bad people and then couldn't even partake of the sacrament! That's like a big red arrow pointing at us...everyone wants to know why you aren't partaking. That makes you feel so comfortable...not really.
After I stopped attending YWs, I told my mom (primary president at the time) that I didn't want to attend Relief Society. I didn't want to be another "Molly Mormon" who cooks extravagent meals and bakes cookies everyday.
I have been inactive in the church for about four years. and like I said, never stopped believing in God or Jesus. Never stopped believing in my conscience telling me what is right and wrong. I just stopped believing that everyone in the church was as perfect as they claim to be. I have pushed the church on my husband (because I had to get married in the temple) and he was baptized in 2004 to basically shut my family up.
I hope that none of this offends you and I apologize if by telling you my personal story that it drags on. I just want to let you know, that by your research and dilligence to learn, you have answered SOOO many questions that I have had for years. You have opened my eyes to the things that were plaguing me about this church and about some of the doctrine taught. I appreciate you.
As you know now, that by educating yourself in this religion, it brings some things your way. I hope that you can find happiness in the fact that you have educated yourself...and there is nothing wrong with that. How dare "the church" have ANY say whatsoever in your knowledge or what you say. That is insane.
Again, thank you very much for your thoughts. You have truly brought some peace to my mind.

You are my hero! I've been following your story on postmormon. Thank you for your example. I'm a mother of three (7, 10, 12). I'm leaving the church after 35 years. My DH is TBM and a stubborn Latino. You've helped me realize I'm not crazy. Thanks!
